So, I finally got fed up of FF being very slow, and slower with every update, but have decided today to give the beta build of FF Quantum a go.

I have to say, it does feel faster, and certainly on a par with Chromium.

The downside is most of my addons don’t work, yet. In particular, LastPass is a no go.

Other than that, probably worth keeping an eye on.

Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.

No lastpass,  no play for me.

Chrome on Windows, is feeling very slow lately. It may be time to check some of the comp out. The hard part is I’m so far down the Google rabbit hole, I doubt I could get back out.

My concern is that the newer versions of Firefox are leaving older versions of plugins in the past which is a shame. Not come across one not working yet, but it’s warning me that I’ve got outdated plugins.

One of the issues I have is sync – I’ve had a couple of issues with FF Sync in the past. Might give it another go, as I was using the Xmarks and that was causing issues as well (possibly because at some point I was using Vivaldi). Maybe time for another go.

I don’t have many plugins, only these 3:

            Cisco Open H264 Video Codec.

            Google Widevine content decryption module.

Shockwave Flash (latest, updated, with “Block dangerous and intrusive Flash content” box checked.)

I do have a number of Extensions I don’t want to lose though, and FF has already marked some as “Legacy”.

Well, doing a little more experimenting. A couple of times it’s delayed starting while updating plugins, so the updates are coming. LastPass still not one of them, but I’ve been manually copying logins for my more frequently used sites, which is not a huge problem.

At the moment, it’s going well. There’s a plugin for Netflix, which fixes the issues on Linux that has plagued FF, and it works for Amazon Prime video, too.

At the moment, bookmarks is separate from the main drop down menu, which keeps catching me out, but I’ve added the bookmarks button as close to the correct place as I can get it, so again not a huge issue. More a muscle memory issue if I’m honest.

I have to say, it is definitely faster than the old FF, and seems to be working well up to now.

              I’ll keep you updated.

                Plugin updates sounds promising.

Manually copying and pasting isn’t the end of the world – I’ve taken to using Keepass recently anyhow. Lack of autofill isn’t a huge issue. However, I was looking at Enpass. I was a keen user of 1Password, but it’s switched to a subscription based model and it’s pricer than Lastpass.

Honestly, since this is my desktop, and FF remembers the logins anyway, it really isn’t much of an issue for now. It’ll be nicer when lastpass updates, but for now, Meh.

As for the browser itself, I originally started using FF years ago, and it got slower and slower. Quantum seems to have Mozilla back on track. I really can’t tell the difference in speed between this and Chromium for startup (maybe FF is slightly slower), but in general use, FF seems slightly faster.

Well, it seems almost every other day a legacy addon gets an update to work. Still no Lastpass, but Adblock now has two options, the original, and the “new and improved”. The difference between the two seems to be whitelisting in the legacy update, and blocks everything in the new one.

Have downloaded on Windows and am giving it a good run.

Looks like you’re right. It’s quite nippy, better than it has been, so that’s good to see. New theme is quite nice and has the default font changed? Seems a bit different to what it was previously.

Nice to see the spell check works as well, unlike Chrome which seems to struggle recently!

I just read a piece on how the latest version of FF (57) is twice as fast of the April (52) release.

                          So maybe worth a look.

I’m drifting back to firefox…will have a look at Quantum but the mainstream version seems to be perking up.

Never really bought in to Chrome (although I switched to it when FF got painfully slow) and it (Chrome) seems to be getting worse. Always found FF mobile (Android) to be excellent – if the Desktop can get parity then happy days.

As a bit of an aside, Chrome Android can’t (I think) turn off Web-RTC so is a no-no for VPN. As another aside Opera (mini) for Android is excellent for downloading.

BL can you expand on why RTC is bad for VPN’s please. I use hotspot shield on my phone with chrome, to make the 3pm footy streams works from the US, when they are blocked for UK etc.

Side note, since the last big Windows update, (red Stone iirc), when i enable the vpn, windows just kills my Internet completely, on all my PC and laptops. I always thought it a bug, that HSS would quickly fix, but it’s yet to be fixed.

I use Chrome all the time for my primary web browser, true it’s mostly on a Chromebook or Android device.

I use Edge on my media pc as neither Chrome or FF play netflix or YouTube properly. Edge takes an age to do anything mind. It’s the little Dell that’s the issue, it’s essentially the innards of a £150 laptop.

                                I still hate Edge though.

Just checked & Lastpass is available as an add-on.

Just updated to 57 and it has now called itself Quantum.

Liking the look and it feels snappier than before – I have to admit to having been converted for daily use to Chrome when FF slowed down. The only reason I kept using FF was for a Free Tetris tab I kept open. Great little version of the game that brings back memories of wiping the floor with top scores on my son’s GameBoy.

                                        First impressions:

I like it, it’s much faster and has several new features that add to the experience. Whilst using it, I became aware that I had lots of bookmarks that I didn’t need, and others that needed tidying into folders. Done that and it’s even more usable. It was getting bloated, I have to admit. Keep it quick, Mozilla!

On Web-RTC, no expert but I believe it is a per-browser vulnerability/feature that allows your real IP to be detected even if you are on a VPN. I first found out about it when I tried http://www.doileak.com/

Quite enlightening as to how much the VPN can do, and how DNS leaks, Web-RTC and other factors can mean you are not “hidden”. Worth running the test and seeing what it picks up.

Web-RTC can be turned/off disabled in Chrome desktop, but not (I believe) Chrome Android, which means unless your VPN provider specifically handles Web-RTC (some can I think) then Chrome is not a good choice for mobile VPN.

Your spot on, while doing the test at first glance it looks like a US ip, but on close inspection, it warns chrome on android (amongst others) is leaking your actual ip too.

Interesting. I only use it for tricking The footy that is live in the US, which works (for now), but I think I’ll have to have a play with other browsers.
