Have just come back from a trip to Russia with my two lads and we have brought quite a lot of WW2 souvenirs with is in the shape of rusty military items dug out of the ground. Examples include a grenade shrapnel sleeve, some empty shell casings, entrenching tools, mortar tails  and the like.

It is all mainly (very) rusty and wonder if anyone has any advice on the best way to keep it in good shape. I have used Kurust before on radiators – but that turns stuff grey before over-paining (not what I want to do here)

Really looking for something that will (a) preserve current appearance and (b) provide some sort of seal to stop  any more rusting.

Not sure if such a product exists, no luck googling but any suggestions gratefully received – ta.

You could try just Waxoiling them. That covers your a and b but it is not really a finish.

Evapo-rust is the best, hands down. White vinegar is also very good, and cheap. Will take longer than Evapo-rust (about twice), and will etch the metals, so vinegar is a balancing act. Depends on how well you want to preserve the items. Given its blown up shrapnel, I’d go with white vinegar at about £1 litre, and a wire brush.

There is no brush or effort needed for Evapo-rust, it’s like magic. And is water based and doesn’t smell.

For rust protection. A light coat of a light oil after you have clean any rust off will protect them. About once a year.

To clean the rust look up electrolysis rust removal on Youtube. I’ve used the method to good effect on a number of occasions.

As others have said, a quick wipe over with an oily rag is sufficient to keep the rust at bay.

Thank you all – some good advice – I’ll experiment as suggested.
