This Ars report fingers two main brands — Blu and Cubot., however who is to say that similar Chiphone companies have not also succumbed to the monetary rewards brought by full access to personal data.

Buyer beware I suppose – cheap means insecure (same story with ip cameras).

IMO the problem is caused by China’s attitude to a citizen’s right to privacy, which does not exist in the PRC. They do not understand such rights, as their government does not abide by the practice, on any level. The individuality of Western peoples, is not something they can easily comprehend.

China just like all nation states (US & UK included) spy on their citizens. (See link). Just like other nations China uses the same excuse that the continuity of the Establishment matters more than the privacy rights of the individual.

Perhaps China has a bit more of an excuse than other nations in that their own nation is a cobbled-together, not entirely stable and happy, amalgam of  Han Chinese and some 56 other identifiably different racial ethnic groups. These other ethnic groups actually featured on their currency link , and they not only look different from one another they speak different dialects of Chinese (Mandarin is often only used as a common trading language between such groups) . There are also the usual tensions and power-plays between the groups which were amplified to an extent by their geographic isolation.

Aunties bloke bought some genuine Lenovo handsets cheap off E-Bay.

After a while they had all sorts of weird things happening so I explained over the phone how to do a reset according to Lenovo’s instructions. Surprise surprise, it wasn’t there. Everything behind the scenes was in Chinese characters, no play store, etc. He had enough sense to bin them.

On the outlook for another bargain he’s bought some genuine but old Samsung handsets. Allied to the shit Cornish 3G coverage I now know why I phone her on the landline. I was down there recently and used my Three in Touch WiFi calling which was fine for text and voice was OK at my end but complaints from the other. Cheap Plusnet techincolor router and shit Cornish ADSL. Max 2ish mpbs unless it rains when it can halve.  So say to them use WiFi calling, bit dodgy but better than walking to the end of the lane. They’re on GiffGaff as it saves a few pennies (but neither are big users) so no WiFi calling.

Buy cheap buy twice. TBH buying one less pint a week would double their monthly mobile budget.

Cousin lives on the same site (it’s converted farm buildings). They rent the barn out in the summer and live in a caravan / summerhouse. The barn has BT FTTC so I got them a wireless bridge and an AP to distribute it in their caravan area, cost about £150. They are on Vodaphone so have WiFi calling and they have 80mbps for them and their visitors to do whatever else they want.

Finally convinced Auntie to let me put a wireless bridge  / AP  into hers and move her off GiffGaff “sometime soon”. Other cousin onsite still not convinced even though she complains all the time about her internet and mobile. Fricking Cornish, they are all nuts.

              As a Devonian, I agree wholeheartedly. ?

I remember a hag in Truro once, as I got my car into a Blue Badge space before she could. The vile stuff spewing from between her black teeth, had to be heard to be believed. When she paused for breath, I asked if she had a Blue Badge: “NO oi don’t need no “”!!!****???**! Blue Badge, oi lives ‘ere!”

I pointed out that she still needed a BB to park in this space, but as she was a local, if she could produce a legal BB, I would move and let her take the space. More obscenities followed. Having had enough, I proceeded to inform her that I had once worked for a boss who had a pig farm, and his best Sow was not only better-looking and smelled much better than her, but had more interesting conversation and probably made better bacon. I really thought she would have a heart attack, but she eventually drove off in a cloud of Red diesel smoke.

Common to both Cornwall and Devon, they have some of the worst telecoms in the UK!

An extra strike against both counties is that they sometimes play silly b’s with the GPS signals around military bases. Makes it very interesting when you get a map clearly showing you should turn left and a GPS saying make a U-turn wherever possible!

My grandparents lived in the Pennycross area of Plymouth until they both died 5 years ago. From the time I first got a digital mobile in 1995 i never had a signal problem when I visited them.

As usual it depends on where you are, your phone and its provider. The Coverage map shows that Plymouth is very well served. The Dart valley is very different. link

Plymouth is the mighty metropolis! In the days when I couldn’t get a 2G signal anywhere in Cornwall, coming down the hill at Saltash towards the bridge was the first place you could make a call.

I’ve just looked at the coverage maps for the big four for PL27 7RX and only Three tell the truth. Just as well their wifi calling works.
