As Header: I am looking for a dash cam, nothing wildly expensive, budget up to £50. Front & rear, 1080 if possible, front only if not. I just want a camera that will provide clear footage in the event of a problem, as the driving around here is getting exponentially worse every day. I have 2x front 12v points and 1x rear. Night views not necessary, I will remove it at night.
As ever, all advice appreciated, personal experiences valued.
Cheers! Bob.

I'm out.July 28, 2017 at 10:00 pm #10625Not used one myself but considering it – but based on what I’ve seen, your budget is to low for the specs you want (front and rear and 1080).
I’m trying to find more info on this Transcend and Anker ones.

July 28, 2017 at 11:24 pm #10626Hi Drezha, thanks for the input. Front & Rear 1080p is beyond my budget, so I will maybe add a rear cam later.
Forgot to say that I have a (current) £50 Currys voucher and Currys have one of these in stock: https://tinyurl.com/yda6ef23 –
Nextbase 312GW at £89.00 from Currys, making it £39.00 with the voucher. All Nextbase dashcams are apprently given insurance company discounts *. Had a good comparison-shop and I like th312GW, although I also liked the Asus Reco Classic:
https://tinyurl.com/y7zyenyv – £99.00 at Amazon, not stocked by Currys. Then I measured up the dimensions in my Tucson, it would have to go behind the rearview mirror and that is a nonsense.
Looks like the 312 GW, but I’m still shopping around.
* The ins. co. discounts are irrelevant to me, as I drive a Motability car.

I'm out.July 28, 2017 at 11:29 pm #10627I have a vantrue dash cam, it’s very good. Iirc it was £80-100 for a single front feasting jobbie
There is a youtube channel called “techMoan” he seems to review all the dash cams and other strange stuff. I bought mine off the back of his review about two years ago.
The link below is the the vantrue X1 priced at £89, but if you scroll down it’s offered with a 32gb Samsung sd card for £71 (camera @ £59)
There is nothing wrong with this camera, but I’d say defo look around. It was a great camera for its price 2 years/18months ago, and at £59it still may be. But I’ve not looked at them for a good while.
Though get a 64gb card. That should last a good day or two before recording over itself. They record in 5 mins chunks, so the bigger the card the longer “that” car park scratch/dink will stay on the sd card.
Also as your a swift driver, (your words) i would keep gps data turned off,if your chosen unit has it. As if your doing 45 in a 40 and some pulls out on you, your footage with a speed log is worthless.
July 28, 2017 at 11:36 pm #10629This one, Steve? https://tinyurl.com/yb3f239k £89.99 at Amazon, unavailable from Currys.
Nice piece of kit for the money, though, better specs than the Nextbase.
EDIT: yes it’s the same one, you edited yours before I could get my reply in. Arthritic fingers, as Richard says, “sausage fingers.”

That X1 actually replaced the model I still have, the R2. The X1 was about £150ish, the R2 down to about £80 from £150ish. I couldn’t justify £150 and I didn’t see the X1 being twice as good as the R2.
The X2 is out now, at £150 and is 2k res, but trust me, the picture on the X1 will be fine, as the older R2 is more than good enough, even at night.
But don’t rush into a purchase, have a look at that yt site I mentioned, and Google whatever you come across. That’s how I do this. Not always though, I often get rushed to the head and buy before my brain engages.
I woke up today to an amazon dispatch notice for a hip flask. For some reason at 2am last night I thought it would be a good idea to have one. I don’t drink spirits anymore! Oh well I best start again.
July 29, 2017 at 12:04 am #10633I seem to be getting confused, the R2 I have seems to be the better model out of the X1 and R2. Amazon has them both for similar money . I may of just forgotten I didn’t justify the extra back then. God knows why, but I can vouch for the R2. There may of been an R3 that just come out when I got the R2 that offered 4k over 2k. Honestly I can’t remember. Lol. I’ll get my coat.
The R2 is £89
Just checked my email and I paid the same £89 for this in jan of 2016. God bless Gmail.
July 29, 2017 at 4:03 pm #10637Looks good Steve, but not available at Currys so I can’t use my £50 voucher. (An “e-gift’ card, printed from their website.) I got that when I set up Sky TV, broadband, phone & Calls Anytime, along with a free NOWTV box (still got that). It was worth walking away twice from thrashing out a 1½ hour conversation with the muppets. Eventually. ?
I’m going with the Nextbase 312 GW, at £89.00 from Currys. https://tinyurl.com/yda6ef23%C2%A0
As in my second post, that’s just £39.00 to me. SWMBO has been hanging on to the voucher for months, can’t find anything she can spend it on. It lasts for 24 months after date of issue. If I never need dashcam footageas evidence, I will be content, know what I mean?

I'm out.July 29, 2017 at 5:20 pm #10641Nothing to add to recommendations, but make sure that you site it legally – the driver must NOT be able to see the screen. Failure to do so would earn the same ‘6 points and£200 ‘ as using your mobile which is imo unfair and irrational, but that is the way it is.
“Ministry of Transport guides addressing the issue of “obstruction to view” through the windscreen are available in detail for your reference at http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/htdocs/m4s08000301.htm – once you are on that page, press the “Next Page” icon at the top for further details regarding obstructing the view and measurements of intrusion allowed in certain areas of the screen.
Some cameras come with a built in screen. It is absolutely illegal to drive, or cause or permit a person to drive, with a screen visible to the driver either directly or by reflection. Cameras with a screen have the option to close the screen or switch it off. Further reading on the topic of being able to view a screen whilst driving and the fact that this is dangerous should be undertaken by visiting the following page for the latest information.
http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1986/1078/regulation/109/made“July 29, 2017 at 5:39 pm #10642I know the screen on my dash can goes off after a user defined time. Mine sits behind my mirror towards the passenger side, so I can’t see it anyway. Not cos I knew of any rules, I just don’t like having crap in my way.
July 29, 2017 at 6:00 pm #10643Thanks for the information Ed. I have no intention of viewing the screen whilst driving. Family members know that I do not even talk much whilst driving, especially to rear seat passengers (!) That’s how I was taught all those years ago in the Army and I have carried it on, always given driving and the road 100% attention. I seethe when I see drivers on the phone, or allowing themselves to be distracted in any other way. Only this morning in Louth, a driver of an oncoming taxi, with passengers, was eating a huge pastie while negotiating a roundabout, spinning the wheel with one hand. He had also ignored the “give way to traffic from the right” rule as well.
The camera will sit under the rear view mirror and set to switch off screen. Just as Professor Steve says. ??
Back to second half of Netherlands v. Sweden now. Some good-looking players out there… Football a bit ‘up & under’ though.

I'm out.July 29, 2017 at 7:05 pm #10646Very interesting, I should really invest.
However, more pressing is a secuirty camera and the X1 looks about perfect. Just two things, what is the motion detection like (for parking) and is it possible to view/download over wifi?
I currently have a 1080p camera but the quality is poor. Image is 1080p when viewing but only 720p for record and the motion detection is awful! Plus, it keeps stopping recording.
