We recently bought a used galaxy s5 from someone at work to give to my oldest son for Christmas ready for when he starts senior school in Sept. However my wife then pointed out that the better/more expensive the phone, the more likely it would be stolen. So we gave it as a joint gift to both sons for Christmas and bought the older one a cheap Nokia feature phone.
However we have recently installed Google trusted contacts on our Android phones and thought it may be better to get a cheap, small android phone for him instead so we can install it on there as well.
So, i see the jelly 4g phone on kickstarter but it’s a little over budget.
Any suggestions?
Ideally smaller than 4.5 inch screen, android 5 or upwards and less than £60. Used is fine if in good condition.
Cheers, marc
July 27, 2017 at 11:01 am #10540LG K4 at O2. If needed unlocks are a few £ on ebay.
I’ve bought a few phones ‘like new’ from O2, all were new but missing the original box and accessories. All mine came with just a USB lead.
July 27, 2017 at 12:58 pm #10544That looks pretty good. Front runner at present. Any thoughts if there are any even smaller with similar cost and Android version?
July 27, 2017 at 1:13 pm #10545There’s the Pixi 4 4, have one and it’s Ok, no powerhouse but it’s dirt cheap, almost disposable. Unlocks are about £1 on ebay.
Forgot that gel case/screen saver sets are about £3, also on ebay.
July 27, 2017 at 1:32 pm #10547Doesn’t seem to be much about at that size. The Sony “Compact” phones are 4.5″ but even the older ones hold their value really well – the Z3 and z5 compact go for similar money to their big brothers (similar specs except lower screen res).
The other thing is the bezel size, a cheap 4.5″ phone with a big bezel might get close in size to a 5″ phone with a smaller bezel, so worth considering the overall size of the phone as well as its screen. At the price point can’t see anything to touch PMs recommendation.
July 27, 2017 at 1:39 pm #10549Good point, a cheap 4.5″ device will be larger than a newer 5″ device.
The Moto E is a little above your budget but a good phone that will get all the updates for the next few years. Including all the security ones, which is something no older cheaper phone will receive.
July 27, 2017 at 8:16 pm #10554The Geordie phones have come a long way for not as much as the top brands. Take a look at Huawei (and the 9 should be getting cheaper now that the 10 has hit the streets). I love mine. OK, not so small (5″ screen), but not so expensive that you will cry in the corner for a month if it goes.
Arch Linux, on a Ryzen 7 1800X, 32 GB, 5 (yes -5) HDs inc 5 SSDs, 4 RPi 3Bs + 1 RPi 4B - one as an NFS server with two more drives, PiHole (shut yours), Plex server, cloud server, and other random Pi stuff. Nice CoolerMaster case, 2 x NV GTX 1070 8GB, and a whopping 32" AOC 1440P monitor.
July 27, 2017 at 8:34 pm #10555Cheers guys, i went with the lg k4. I’ll let you know how my son gets on with it
July 27, 2017 at 8:35 pm #10556Wife has the P9, it’s a good phone, thr os is a little wonky though. Nothing wrong with it, it’s just a little confusing, after being on stock and cm for so long.
I found out earlier Huawei Owns 10% of smartphone worldwide, which makes it numerous 3 behind Samsung and Apple.
I found out reading a press report saying that they was ditching the budget and lower midrange devices as the margins are next zero.
