Well, so says Tech Radar, and Matt Hanson is having a Rant about it:
Although why he wants to criticise it before he knows what shape it will take, I have no idea. Calm down, Hanson!

The home page on the cadet unit computers use this as their home page, but many of the step by step guides for the tech illiterate start here and I am too lazy to change them ?

Habit for me, and also use duckduckgo as my default search in the url bar means if I want “google” I go to the home page.
Older folks I help also like it as they see it as “the internet” or at least the starting point for “the internet” – which I completely get since it is a good a place to start as any. I think it is still the most common “home page”, which I reckon is probably a lot to do with how plain and simple it is. Be interesting to see how it goes and what the effects are. No skin of my nose but sometimes less is more.

I'm out.July 22, 2017 at 9:43 am #10396It’s my home page for whichever browser I use. Whenever I need to look for something, it’s so easy to type into the middle box, although these days the url bar does the same thing.
I still have my everyday sites bookmarked, although I’ve found I’m accessing them that way a lot less, recently, since installing LastPass last year. That has turned into the simple route to access my most used sites as I don’t need to memorise the LogIn details.
As Bob says, the “fluidity” of ( almost:) ) everything Google, well Photos, Maps, Drive, Google+, etc all together is really handy.

Correctamundo! Exactly my point. I went from a position of Google suspicion, to almost loving it. Set up my Home Page as Google in Firefox.

I'm out.July 22, 2017 at 12:25 pm #10401Most of us have sold our souls to google – I think it is more the point specifically about the home page – a bit obsolete with search boxes, the url bar and things like firefox/chrome new tab page. I still find myself using the google home page out of habit, and like others I like the big, obvious text entry box that screams “search”. The fact it has stayed familiar while the rest of the world changes is something I like too. Hope they don’t fix what ain’t broke.
July 22, 2017 at 3:34 pm #10405My thoughts too, BL: –

Sometimes changes are made for changes’ sake. Simplifying or elaborating it, may ruin it.

Yes Steve, set my Homepage in Firefox to google.co.uk. Google & Firefox are both synced on all devices. Thanks mainly to the advice from you and other Forumites, (and MM) I learned a lot. You’re never too old to learn!

I'm out.July 22, 2017 at 9:23 pm #10411I left the FF fold about ten years ago now.
July 23, 2017 at 2:47 pm #10421I’m used to FF, it does what I want and works fine with Google. I think it gets a bad rep from people who just get too may Addons and Plugins they don’t need. That slows it down, and most of them are irrelevant to most user’s needs. I have just 7 Addons & 3 Plugins, all do something useful and/or necessary. Every time I added something from an independent dev, if it worked and I kept it, I donated.
